Beyond the Ordinary

Usually, people want to rest with their friends or family in the most attractive and iconic places. These places are known for their picturesque views but lack something extraordinary. Regularly,  travel agencies come up with one-of-a-kind ideas that could provide unforgettable experiences in tourists’ lives. Let me take you on a tour of some of the most unusual tourist attractions, open not only to locals but also tourists around the globe.

Let’s start with the intriguing tourist spot which is situated in San Luis Obispo downtown in California, US – “Bubblegum Alley”. This alley is 4,5 meters high and  21 meters long and has a collection of gum marks left by random strangers. While this might be an unusual form of expression for some, it may not be appealing to everyone. Without any doubt, this place will attract and welcome multiple tourists in the coming years!

Now, we travel to India and its famous rat temple. Most visitors have had quite a spine-chilling experience there. This feared venue named “Karni Mata Temple” owes its name to the goddess Karni who prophesied that everyone would eventually turn into a rat. Due to her prophecy, the local community treats rats as holy beings and the priests and pilgrims feed the animals with milk and grain. Believers who visit the temple have to move inside without wearing shoes. This tradition concerns tourists, so only the bravest decide to enter. It has to be sometimes totally repulsive to be there barefoot, but if you are willing to explore the rat’s world, this place is for you!

Discover another, popular tourist attraction that offers an experience of swimming in a variety of beverages! Located in Hakone, Kanagawa region, Japan, this place allows visitors to choose from options like coffee, wine, or green tea. Guests to their heart’s content can take a dip while enjoying a drink of their choice. Just imagine the number of liters poured when people use this attraction – undoubtedly, a significant quantity which seems like a waste, doesn’t it?

Not only in the Asian region, tourists can observe various iconic attractions. For instance, one of them is located in Macedonia, in the small village of Kuklica in the municipality of Kratovo. This old-fashioned spot has inherited the same name “Kuklica”. Looking at the surface, it is quite small because it consists of just 74 acres, but it also has as many as 120 massive stone pillars that have stood for 100,000 years! According to legends, it all started with the unfortunate wedding party there, when a man was struggling to choose between two women. He decided to marry both on the same day without anyone knowing. Unfortunately, the second wife returned to check out the spot and was frightened watching her husband marrying the other. In enormous rage, she cursed the wedding party and everyone there turned to stone where they are standing until now creating ‘’Kuklica’’. Legend says one, but the science will give you a more down-to-earth explanation. The stone dolls are a natural phenomenon created by long-term erosion of volcanic rocks.

The next venue also gives a spooky vibe with its eerie “mummy museum” known as the Capuchin Catacombs, located in Palermo, Italy. This place consists of 8000 mummies housed under the Capuchin’s monastery. The first dead were buried in the 16th century and the last, only 2-year-old Rosalia Lombardo, rested in catacombs in the 1920’s. The mummified bodies are fully clothed and tourists can observe them standing, sitting, or hanging. It’s certainly not a type of attraction for people who are sensitive.

The final destination on this distinctive list of tourist spots centers around nature and the environment highlighting the extraordinary beauty of Lake Hillier in West Australia. The lake looks totally different from any other lake around the world because of its distinct pink color and also beautiful surroundings. Some scientists say this one-of-a-kind color is due to high salinity combined with the presence of a pink bacteria known as halobacteria.

Despite, sometimes disturbing knowledge, most people aren’t discouraged to come and admire those places. All of these venues regularly receive nice profits and gain bigger popularity. For sure, in the near future, there will be more attractions of this type. Always good to add a little variety to people’s entertainment.
