Banksy

Banksy is an emblematic artist of street art of this century, but the mystery still floating around Banksy and his identity, nobody knows who is Banksy and his real face. In all likelihood, Banksy is a Street art graffiti artist from Bristol, England.

Born tentatively in 1974, it was not until the 1980s that he began to handle the aerosol, after completing a butcher training. But it was between 1992 and 1994 he became truly a graffiti artist, as part of a group called the Bristol’s DrybreadZ Crew (DBZ), assisting his colleagues Kato and Tes. Mythic artist of graffiti search to denounce society problem by wall in each continents with dark humour. These works can touch every people in the street and attracted a lot fans and art lovers. His art is a mixture of irony, irreverence, humor and often contains very clear messages, in the context where they are not interpreted literally. He brings back art in street with strong message and denounce war, inequality, american consumerism but every time with humor and estheticism, his trademark.

Another particularity with this artist is the technique uses, the stencil is his favorite technique because he can work quickly and make quality work. He chose this technique because he was often surprised by the police.

But the artist doesn’t do just graffiti he also produces urban installations, some of these works the same exhibition in galleries worldwide.  During the course of an interview for artbanksy.com, Banksy tells about his techniques :

« I use what is necessary. Sometimes, it is simply drawing a mustache on the face of a young woman on a poster while in other cases, I must work hard for days in order to fine-tune a drawing and make it more elaborate. Efficiency is the key ! »

He likes work on the basis of things existing already. We see in some of his artworks uses his environment as a basis, as much on the street as in other artworks on galleries.

In 2005, Banksy uses the principe with classic artworks in the « crude oils » exhibition and revisit for example « Nymphéas » by Claude Monet or « sunflowers » by Vincent Van Gogh.

Further more Banksy has no limit for show and denounce important messages, his work by invading the most sought-after art museums in the world without anyone doubting his presence. He does not commit any act of vandalism or trespass: he simply hangs on to his work, incognito. These works are, for the most part, reproductions of the greatest art works in the world, but modern and updated according to Banksy’s thoughts like Nymphéas or Sunflowers. Funny fact: Certain museum directors sometimes take days before realizing that an unusual picture is gracing the walls of their establishments. Some take them off while others keep them carefully in the same place for a few days.

images-8Banksy is the subject of a 2010 documentary, Exit through the Gift Shop, which examines the relationship between commercial and street art and the story of Banksy’s Art. Realized by Banksy himself representated at the Sundance and Berlinale festivals movie and nominated for Oscarof Best Documentary in January 2011.

The artiste is even up to create, Dismaland its own temporary an anti-amusement park art installation located in the seaside resort of Weston-super-Mare, England. He describes the parc like « family theme park unsuitable for children. » and « a sinister twist on Disneyland ».

Works by 58 artists, including Jenny Holzer, Damien Hirst , Jimmy Cauty and Bill Barminski were featured in the park. Banksy said he contacted the “best artists I could imagine,” to exhibit, with two artists turning him down. On Fridays there were scheduled performances by musicians including Run the Jewels, De La Soul, Damon Albarn, and Pussy Riot. Many celebrities were attracted to the venue, some international, such as Brad Pitt, Jack Black, Neil Patrick Harris, Nicholas Hoult, Russell Brand, Ant & Dec, Mark Ronson, Darren Criss, Daddy G and CGP Grey & Brady Haran to name a few. That opened during the weekend of 21 August 2015 and closed permanently on 27 September 2015, 36 days later after one month of exhibition.

Finally, Banksy’s ability to fascinate the public with his art and his way of being nowhere and everywhere at the same time makes him an intrigue and a mystery that everyone always want to listen to and know.
