RK Vardar was founded in 1961 as a part of Sport Club Vardar from Skopje. Its biggest success the club achieved during the last decade of the past century.
RK Vardar from Skopje is the most successful Macedonian club who has won so far 10 titles in the state championship and became a winner of the Cup. It is always in the top of the Macedonian handball competition. It is the very first winner of the regional SEHA Gazprom League in which it achieved 2 triumphs in total. RK Vardar entered the European Handball competitions for the first time in the 93/94 season competing in the Cup of EHF. In the EHF Champion League the club made it 3 times till the quarterfinals so far, 3 seasons in a row, a success that no men club of Macedonia has achieved before.
The biggest Macedonian handball stars had played in RK Vardar such as Pepi Manaskov, Vanco Jovanovski, Ace Stankovski, Ljubomir Savevski, DraganMarinkovic, Zoran Petkovski, Igor Kotevski, Stevce Alusovski, Branislav Angelovski, Marjan Kolev, Kiril Atanasovski and many others.
Last few years, several players from Vardar played role in the national team of Macedonia and there are always some of them playing in international teams. The coach of Vardar has been several times a manager of the national team.
In the season 2013/2014 a new owner of the team has been introduced, Sergey Samsonenko who brought Spaniard Raul Gonzalez as a coach of the team and made a great turnover in Macedonian handball history.
On 27thApril 2017 in the Sportive Center Jane Sandanski, fulfilled up to the last seat, with 6500 spectators who have witnessed the decision of Vardar to change the handball history, Macedonia qualified to quarterfinal, beating German Flensburg 35:27.
On 3rdand 4thJune in Cologne, Germany, Vardar played semi-final and final of the European Champion League facing the great teams like Barcelona and Paris Saint Germaine. In the semi-finals Vardar played against Barcelona, 8 times winner, and won by the result of 26:25. In the next 24 hours Vardar played the finals with Paris Saint Germaine in a hard, unpredictable game, winning over French champion and getting the European title. RK Vardar is European Handball Champion for 2017, the most important moment for the club and Macedonia as well.
It was a moment of joy and success for the most Balkan countries but also a shock for European countries; how come a small country as Macedonia has created the European Handball Champion club.
Macedonia celebrates, a euphoria that will last days for the fans of this sport and the whole Macedonian people proud of this club who made it out from the little tiny training room in the suburb to the European Champion.
The Red-Blacks have written handball history that will be remembered and recalled long time throughout Europe. Pride of Macedonia!
